Downtown Bellflower / Bellflower Boulevard

The former Somerset Avenue, renamed in 1930, has been the city's commercial spine since the Pacific Electric's Somerset stop opened in 1905; the corridor thrived as a shopping strip through the 1950s and 60s even as regional malls drew business from other Southeast LA cities.

The 1904-06 one-acre farm-lot subdivisions platted by Emil Firth and Frank E.

North Bellflower

Built up with more exclusive postwar homes on the old narrow, deep Woodruff-sized lots, which also made convenient footprints for the apartment buildings squeezed in as rental demand grew through the 1950s and 60s.

South Bellflower (former dairy belt)

Concentrated the city's Dutch, Portuguese, and Swiss dairy ranches through the 1930s and 40s, when Los Angeles County led the state in dairy production; most operations moved east to the newly formed Dairy Valley (today's Cerritos) as postwar land values rose.

Clark Street corridor

Emerged as a second major shopping street in the 1950s alongside Bellflower Boulevard, part of the city's deliberate postwar choice to court small merchants over a regional shopping mall.

Flora Vista / rail corridor

A neighborhood of small wooden houses that housed Hispanic Pacific Electric line-crew families in the 1920s, part of a labor community with roots in the Californio vaqueros who worked the original ranchos before subdivision.
