The original settlement that became Calimesa sat on this mesa of former cattle-grazing land; roughly 40 to 50 homesteading families here petitioned for their own post office in 1929, giving the town its name.

Part of the 6,400-acre Oak Valley Specific Plan straddling the Calimesa-Beaumont line, this master-planned community (now marketed as Summerwind Trails) is slated to bring roughly 3,600 homes, 80 acres of parkland and 20 miles of trails to the city's southeast side.
