Full neighbourhood file →The city's original commercial core along Hawthorne Boulevard grew out of the 80-acre townsite platted by the Hawthorne Improvement Company in January 1906; the city incorporated here as a sixth-class municipality on July 12, 1922, and today's City Hall sits a few blocks from that original grid.
The 35-acre former Hawthorne Plaza mall, built in 1974-77 with Montgomery Ward, The Broadway and JCPenney as anchors, closed in 1999 and sat vacant for two decades before the city won a 2025 court order forcing its owner to demolish it, with demolition beginning in August 2026.
A western Hawthorne neighborhood zoned into the separate Wiseburn Unified School District rather than Hawthorne School District; Hollyglen Elementary (the former Juan Cabrillo Elementary) opened a rebuilt campus in December 2008 and the neighborhood's Wiseburn Middle School opened its current building in 2007.
Centered on the city park of the same name at 2058 W.
A residential tract southwest of North Central Hawthorne, generally sited around Prairie Avenue and 135th Street, that takes its name from the adjoining Ramona Park the city has grouped with Holly Park for capital improvement work.
