NeighbourhoodDowntown Hawthorne / Civic Center
The city's original commercial core along Hawthorne Boulevard grew out of the 80-acre townsite platted by the Hawthorne Improvement Company in January 1906; the city incorporated here as a sixth-class municipality on July 12, 1922, and today's City Hall sits a few blocks from that original grid.
NeighbourhoodThree Sixty South Bay (Hawthorne Plaza site)
The 35-acre former Hawthorne Plaza mall, built in 1974-77 with Montgomery Ward, The Broadway and JCPenney as anchors, closed in 1999 and sat vacant for two decades before the city won a 2025 court order forcing its owner to demolish it, with demolition beginning in August 2026.
