Full neighbourhood file →The Strand
Hermosa's stretch of the beachfront boardwalk runs from the Redondo Beach line north through Manhattan Beach toward Santa Monica; unlike its two neighboring Beach Cities, Hermosa Beach owns its own sand outright rather than leasing it from Los Angeles County.
Sand Section
The blocks between the Strand and the Hermosa Valley Greenbelt hold the city's densest concentration of small, rebuilt beach lots around the 1,000-foot concrete pier, built in 1913 after the original 1904 wood pier partially washed out.
Hermosa Valley
The flatter area between the Greenbelt and Pacific Coast Highway takes its name from Hermosa Valley Elementary.
The Hill Section
East of Pacific Coast Highway along the Redondo Beach border, this hillside area was built out later than the flat sections nearer the beach and its elevated lots carry panoramic ocean views.
Hermosa Valley Greenbelt
A 24-acre former Pacific Electric Railway right-of-way running parallel to the Strand, saved from planned retail and condominium development when a 1985 ballot initiative to preserve it passed with nearly 87 percent of the vote, one of the widest margins in California history.
Pier Avenue District
The Pier Avenue corridor around Pier Plaza holds the city's dining and nightlife core, including the Lighthouse Café at 30 Pier Avenue, a West Coast jazz venue operating since 1949, and the Comedy & Magic Club, where Jay Leno has performed regularly since 1978.
