If you’re looking at a home near an Altadena park, the recovery map is mixed. In its July 21, 2026 update, LA County Parks marks Loma Alta Park and Altadena Triangle Park complete, while Farnsworth Park and Eaton Canyon Natural Area remain closed. Altadena Golf Course has restored playing areas but still lacks several facilities. An October 7 bulletin provides a later update only for Charles White Park.
This is general information and not legal advice.
Which Altadena parks are complete?
Loma Alta Park and Altadena Triangle Park are the two sites marked “COMPLETED!” in the LA County Parks recovery update dated July 21, 2026.
That label is the clearest status the department gives for either park. The update does not add the same completed label to Charles White Park, Farnsworth Park, Eaton Canyon Natural Area or Altadena Golf Course. Treat each site separately rather than assuming one reopening means the wider park system has reached the same stage.
What is being built at Charles White Park?
The county reports a groundbreaking ceremony at Charles White Park on October 3, 2026. The work is divided into three phases, with a fall 2027 grand opening target.
Phase I covers pickleball courts, sports lighting, a terraced patio, picnic tables, a drinking fountain, accessible walkways and landscaping. Phase II includes more accessible walkways, exercise stations, civic art, an outdoor classroom, a demonstration garden, a playground, pedestrian lighting and landscaping. Phase III adds water play, a community building, the main entrance, more accessible walkways, civic art and landscaping.
The July update said Phase I permits had been secured and Phase II construction documents were finished. Its schedule then called for Phase I and II groundbreaking in September 2026 and Phase III groundbreaking in fall 2026.
An October 7 county bulletin says a groundbreaking ceremony was held on October 3, 2026. That later notice also describes a splash pad and creek-style water play, a new recreation center building, park lighting and electrical improvements, three enhanced entrances, pickleball courts with lighting, ADA-accessible walkways, terraced seating, a demonstration garden, an outdoor classroom and public art.
When should Charles White Park be complete?
In the county’s July update, Charles White Park has a fall 2027 grand opening target, but the county does not give another construction end date.
The July milestone table separately lists “Bldg+Splash: Mar-27.” That is a project milestone, not a stated reopening date. The July deck targeted a September groundbreaking, while the October bulletin reports the ceremony on October 3, so check for newer notices before relying on the published schedule.
The county marks Charles White Park fundraising complete with $10.5 million secured. It also said the Board of Supervisors approved $1.4 million in ongoing funding, including seven positions for staffing and programming. The October bulletin credits significant state funds and support from The Walt Disney Company. MyNewsLA reports that Disney donated $5 million and describes the park as five acres.
For a purchase decision, ask for the newest county schedule if fall 2027 is important to you. Do not fill a gap in the documents with assumptions about construction activity, nearby streets, noise or home values. The cited sources do not address those subjects.
Why is Farnsworth Park still closed?
Farnsworth Park remains closed because the county says it is not safe for public entry and lists major utility limitations across the park.
The July update identifies no electrical service parkwide, no irrigation system, and limited domestic water service and distribution. It does not give a general reopening date.
One defined project is the Dodgers Dreamfield work, covering the field, backstops, dugouts, scoreboards and a STEM wall. The county lists a November 2026 Phase 3 groundbreaking and a spring 2027 Phase 3 grand opening. That spring date is contingent upon the legally required ADA path of travel and restrooms, so it should not be treated as unconditional or as a reopening date for the entire park.
Other Farnsworth projects are at earlier or less fully funded stages. The Reflection Garden is still in schematic design and design development. Its funding line shows $4 million for the complete scope and a $2 million need for a reduced scope. The Davies Building and other structures have a listed total need of $63 million, including $48 million for the Davies Building. Asbestos remediation at that building is marked completed, but the update does not say the building or park has reopened.
What is the status of Eaton Canyon?
Eaton Canyon Natural Area remains closed for safety and security and ecological restoration purposes, with no reopening date stated.
A Landscape Recovery Center opened March 7, 2026, according to the timeline in the July deck. That opening should not be confused with reopening the canyon itself. The same document continues to mark the canyon closed.
The county also lists funding needs for two parts of the site: $17 million for the Nature Center and $18 million for the plateau. Those figures describe identified needs, not a completion schedule.
A buyer checking this area can use the county’s exact wording and look for a later department notice before assuming access has changed. The available update gives a firm closure status for the canyon, but it does not provide a date when that status will end.
For a separate local environmental program, the guide to the Altadena New Roots lead soil pilot explains what that program covers.
How much of Altadena Golf Course is restored?
Altadena Golf Course has restored fairways, greens, bunkers and a driving range, but the county still lists no restrooms, no office and no sewer connection.
That combination matters when reading a short description of the site. Restored playing surfaces do not mean every facility or service has returned. The July update does not say the course has fully reopened, and it gives no date for a full reopening.
Ask which specific feature you need to verify. If it is the driving range, the update places it among the restored areas. If it is a restroom, office or sewer connection, the same document lists that item as absent. For any current access question, check for a later LA County Parks notice rather than extending the July status beyond what it says.
The recovery program is also incomplete as a whole. The county says it secured approximately $64 million through grants, charitable contributions and donations, but that amount is insufficient to rebuild all damaged park infrastructure. Its summary header lists $0 from FEMA, more than $2 million from insurance and more than $60 million fundraised.
What should you check before buying nearby?
You should confirm the exact park, the latest county notice and the particular amenity that matters to you before relying on a recovery schedule.
Start with the July recovery deck, then check for later bulletins. Charles White Park is a good reason to do both: the deck projected a September groundbreaking, while the later bulletin records the ceremony on October 3. The fall 2027 target remains the only stated grand opening date for the whole project.
Keep park recovery separate from shared-property questions covered by the California HOA disclosure guide and parcel questions addressed in the Altadena SB 1090 lot split pause guide.
We were helping an Altadena family understand which neighborhood amenities had returned after the fires. They had seen announcements about rebuilt park facilities and assumed every county park in the area had reopened. We checked each location separately because one completed reconstruction did not tell us whether another park, trail or building was accessible.
The short version
Loma Alta Park and Altadena Triangle Park are marked complete. The county reports an October 3, 2026 groundbreaking ceremony for Charles White Park and targets a fall 2027 grand opening, with three phases covering courts, play areas, water play, a new building, accessible paths and other improvements.
Farnsworth Park is not safe for public entry, and its Dreamfield schedule is conditional on an ADA path of travel and restrooms. Eaton Canyon Natural Area remains closed for safety and security and ecological restoration. Altadena Golf Course has restored fairways, greens, bunkers and its driving range, but the county lists no restrooms, office or sewer connection.
Before relying on any date, check the newest LA County Parks notice for the named site and the exact amenity you care about.
