Full neighbourhood file →One of the first areas with private homes after May Rindge began leasing lots in the 1920s to Hollywood stars including Anna Q.
Named in 1793 by British navigator George Vancouver for Father Francisco Dumetz (the spelling later drifted to 'Dume'); it stayed a sparsely developed equestrian area into the 1960s before ranch-style homes and, later, celebrity estates such as Johnny Carson's 1984 purchase built it into a gated bluff-top community.
A historically wide sand beach that has suffered chronic erosion for decades; homeowners formed the Broad Beach Geologic Hazard Abatement District in 2011 to fund and permit ongoing revetment and sand-nourishment work to hold the shoreline.
Site of May Rindge's unfinished 50-room hilltop mansion above Malibu Lagoon, sold to the Franciscan Order in 1942 for $50,000 and converted into a Catholic retreat center; the original building burned in a 1970 wildfire and was rebuilt using surviving Malibu Potteries tile.
Subdivided by May Rindge in the late 1920s as one of Malibu's first residential tracts west of Carbon Canyon; nicknamed 'Billionaire's Beach,' its narrow strip of roughly 70 homes built directly on the sand became the focus of a 25-year public-beach-access fight that the California Coastal Commission resolved against owner David Geffen in 2007.
Inland hillside neighborhood across Pacific Coast Highway from Zuma Beach, historically used for cattle grazing and horse property before subdivision into larger residential lots; it lost many homes in the 2018 Woolsey Fire and has been rebuilding since.
