Full neighbourhood file →Built around the Hay Tree, a camphor tree planted in 1883 in the old town of Hynes and designated California Historic Landmark No.
Founded in 1886-87 by the California Cooperative Colony Tract Company as a dairy-and-hay settlement, Clearwater merged with neighboring Hynes in 1948 to form Paramount; the name still identifies a district on local real-estate listing sites today.
The dairy town whose 1948 post-office merger with Clearwater created Paramount; at its peak the combined Hynes-Clearwater district carried some 25,000 dairy cows, more per square mile than anywhere west of Chicago.
Consolidated and renamed in 1931 from a patchwork of older street names — Ocean Avenue, College Avenue, Richfield Boulevard — Paramount Boulevard later gave the merged city its name in the 1948 Hynes-Clearwater unification.
Home to the Zamboni Company since 1939, founded by Frank Zamboni, inventor of the ice-resurfacing machine; the family has also operated the adjoining Iceland skating rink since the same year.
