Built around the Hay Tree, a camphor tree planted in 1883 in the old town of Hynes and designated California Historic Landmark No. 1038 in 2003; hay traders gathered under it each morning from 1930 to 1960 to set a price quoted on the New York and Chicago markets.

Founded in 1886-87 by the California Cooperative Colony Tract Company as a dairy-and-hay settlement, Clearwater merged with neighboring Hynes in 1948 to form Paramount; the name still identifies a district on local real-estate listing sites today.
