Rosemead's earliest Anglo-American settlement, founded in 1852 when John and Harriet Guess ox-carted in from Arkansas and later purchased 100 acres they named Savannah; the adjacent Savannah Pioneer Cemetery at Mission Drive and Valley Boulevard, with a first burial in 1846, is reputed to be the oldest Protestant cemetery in Los Angeles County.
The seat of city government since incorporation on August 4, 1959; today's City Hall sits at 8838 Valley Boulevard, a few blocks from the original truck-farm and ranch acreage that gave way to Rosemead's postwar tract housing.
Built over the site of Rosemead Airport, a 1941-42 general-aviation field that hosted Fletcher Aviation's wartime dropable-fuel-tank plant and, later, Sargent Fletcher's aerospace manufacturing; the airport closed in the early 1950s and the property, bordered by the 10 Freeway, Rosemead Boulevard, and the Rio Hondo wash, was redeveloped as the Flair Park industrial district — a name drawn from Fletcher Aviation's own cable address, "Flair.".
Southern California Edison and parent company Edison International moved their headquarters to a Walnut Grove Avenue campus in 1971; SCE remains Rosemead's single largest employer, with more than 2,700 employees according to the city's own financial reporting.
