The Garvey Avenue corridor takes its name from Richard Garvey Sr., a U.S. mail rider from 1860 to 1863; the area was ranched and homesteaded after the Mexican government broke up the San Gabriel Mission's land in 1833, and a handful of mobile-home parks along the avenue still trace back to that early homesteading era.

Rosemead's earliest Anglo-American settlement, founded in 1852 when John and Harriet Guess ox-carted in from Arkansas and later purchased 100 acres they named Savannah; the adjacent Savannah Pioneer Cemetery at Mission Drive and Valley Boulevard, with a first burial in 1846, is reputed to be the oldest Protestant cemetery in Los Angeles County.
