Full neighbourhood file →South Gate's historic downtown commercial strip between Otis Street and California Avenue, named for the Tweedy family, who bought roughly 2,000 acres of the area after R.D.
Platted as its own planned community in the early 1920s, with factories rising near the railroad tracks and a small downtown forming around a post office; the Great Depression stalled its growth for nearly a decade before a wartime building boom filled it back in.
The 1918 subdivision on the former Cudahy Ranch that gave the city its name — residents shortened South Gate Gardens to South Gate for the 1923 incorporation vote — with the earliest platted streets sitting near today's civic core along California Avenue.
The industrial stretch around Alameda Street and Firestone Boulevard where the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company opened a plant on a former bean field in December 1927; the site was sold off for redevelopment after the plant closed in the mid-1980s.
A small, roughly 4-acre neighborhood park with a playground and ball field that anchors the residential streets around it, one of the smaller of South Gate's city-run parks.
