State Route 39 runs the length of the city as its commercial spine and is the subject of the Caltrans-funded Livable Beach Boulevard Mobility Plan, addressing decades of aging motels and used-car lots.
The nonprofit continuing-care retirement community on Dale Avenue was founded by Orange County Quakers in 1965 as Quaker Gardens before rebranding in 2015, and remains one of the city's largest employers.
