Full neighbourhood file →Home to the largest Buddhist temple in North America, a 15-acre, 102,432-square-foot campus completed in 1988 by the Taiwan-based Fo Guang Shan order, built in Ming- and Qing-dynasty architectural style.
A quiet residential pocket southwest of Main Street near Stimson Avenue and Colima Road, with roughly 1,245 residents per Census-tract data; mid-century ranch homes here predate the hillside construction closer to the temple.
Custom homes built mostly in the 1980s–90s climb the hillsides above Colima Road toward Turnbull Canyon and Hacienda Hills; the Puente Hills form the community's southern and western green belt and top out at 1,391-foot Workman Hill.
The community's founding name, given when developers Edwin Hart and Jet Torrance subdivided Lucky Baldwin's former ranch in 1913 for avocado, citrus, and walnut groves; the area wasn't renamed Hacienda Heights until 1961.
The community's western edge borders the former Puente Hills Landfill, once the largest active landfill in the United States before its 2013 closure; it now operates as a gas-to-energy facility alongside habitat-authority parkland and hiking trails.
