Glass magnate Edward Drummond Libbey financed architects Frank Mead and Richard Requa's 1916-17 Spanish Colonial Revival redesign of Nordhoff's Main Street into the Mission-style Arcade, pergola, and post office bell tower that still anchor Ojai Avenue; the town renamed itself Ojai the following spring.
The Arbolada
Libbey bought 360 wooded acres north of downtown in 1922, cleared the underbrush by hand to save the largest oaks, and laid out winding, stone-curbed streets for half-acre-plus lots; the oak-canopied enclave still carries the name Arbolada, Spanish for "woodland.".
Taormina
Built through the 1960s and 1970s in the style of Normandy French architecture by Theosophist Ruth Wilson as a retirement community for fellow Theosophists near the Krotona Institute, Taormina became Ojai's first designated historic district in 2016; a 1980s court ruling opened the community to residents of any faith.
East End
The stretch of East Ojai Avenue between downtown and the foothills has been anchored since 1986 by Boccali's, the family-run Italian restaurant whose produce comes from the Boccali family's own Upper Ojai farm; it's the valley's low-density, semi-rural fringe rather than a platted tract.
Foothills Tract
Edward Drummond Libbey bought property here in 1909 and built the Craftsman-style home designed by Myron Hunt and Elmer Grey that first drew him into remaking the town below; homes along Foothill Road remain among the valley's most expensive.
