The neighbourhoods

Where Pasadena actually breaks down, in the desk's own words.

Old Pasadena

The city's original 19th-century commercial core, restored beginning in the 1980s after decades of decline, anchors Pasadena's Civic Center alongside the Playhouse District and South Lake Avenue.

Bungalow Heaven

A Craftsman bungalow landmark district of more than 800 homes built mostly between 1900 and 1930, roughly bounded by Washington Boulevard, Orange Grove Boulevard, Mentor Avenue and North Chester Avenue.

South Lake

The South Lake Avenue shopping district anchors this neighborhood, which sits between Old Pasadena and Madison Heights.

Playhouse District

Named for the Pasadena Playhouse, founded in 1917, this district just east of Old Town saw intensive 1960s-80s high-rise redevelopment often nicknamed "Manhattanization.".

Linda Vista

Pasadena's largest neighborhood by area and one of its wealthiest, home to sculptor Alexander Calder in the early 1900s and to the sought-after mid-century Pegfair Estates tract.

San Rafael

A hillside neighborhood west of downtown developed largely in the 1940s for wealthier residents during Pasadena's postwar housing shortage.

A day around here

Ordinary life in Pasadena, the way it actually runs — not a highlight reel.

Morning

Coffee at Europane Bakery & Cafe, then whatever the day actually needs.

Afternoon

An hour at Pasadena Memorial Park, between the errands that never show up on a listing sheet.

Evening

Dinner at Alexander's, then a short drive back to whichever neighbourhood you call home.
